Abstract
27,619. Taylor, J. W. Dec. 16. Fire-escapes. - One end of a flexible escape tube 8 is fastened to a roller beneath a window 3. On releasing the pawl 18, normally held in contact with the ratchet 16 by the spring 19, the tube descends, and the skeleton frame 2, to the cross-beams 9 of which the tube is attached, swings out from the wall to the position shown, where it is supported, preferably by a chain 4 fastened to a ring 5 provided with a spring 6. The open end 10 of the tube 8, which has a flap secured to the window, may have straps to aid entry, and the other end is made with a flap 11, so that it is impossible for a person to fall out at the bottom. A fireproof flap may be attached to the apparatus to protect the tube, and, when not in use, caps 20 act as weather coverings. The tube is wound up by worm-wheel gearing actuated from inside the building. A series of rollers and tubes may be used on a single frame.
