Abstract

24,487. Wichmann, G. C. H., and Evans, A. B. Nov. 11. Lithographic and like printing; feeding sheets.- A machine for printing on tin plates and the like has a roller c, Fig. 1, carrying an aluminium or similar printing-surface, suitably damped and inked in the usual manner, and transferring the design to a cylinder b having a rubber or like surface, from which the design is pressed on to the tin plate, carried round between the gripper and impression cylinder a and the printing cylinder b. The shaft b<1> of the cylinder b runs in eccentric bearings q, and the cylinder may be moved out of contact with the cylinders c, a, when desired, during the printing operation by pressing the pedal v. This action depresses the tumbler u, and allows the link s, reciprocated by the cam t<1>, roller t, and lever s<1> to pull over the lever r<1> during the printing operation, and thereby, through the lever r, an adjustable link, and the lever q<1>, partly turns the eccentric bushes q on each side of the machine and moves the cylinder b oat of action. When the pedal v rises through the action of a spring, the hook at the end of the link s no longer engages the pin r', and the cylinder b remains in working position. The sheets of tin are fed by hand, one by one, from a table f to a vertical steel face-plate g, Figs. 1 and 2, supported on a feed-board g<1> mounted on brackets g<2>. The lower edge passes between springs i adjustably mounted on a guidebar i<1> and smoothers k on the shaft k<1>, and finally rests on the tips of the arms h mounted on a shaft h<1>. The sheet is then gripped by the grippers e, and at the same time a cam m on the cylinder a, lowers the arms h through a roller n on a lever n<1> engaging a roller o on a lever o<1> on the shaft h<1>, and also moves backwards the smoothers k through the extra links and levers h<2>, k<2>. The sheet being vertical, its own weight helps to overcome its inertia, and it passes down between the guides l and the cylinder a, is printed on by the cylinder b, and pulled past the guides l<1>, Fig. 1, the hindmost edge springing outwards immediately it has passed the guides l<1>. At the same time the grippers e are turned backwards to release the front edge of the sheet, which falls printed side uppermost on the table l'. The grippers are opened by a pin p<1>, Fig. 2, mounted on an arm adjustable in position, engaging with a slot in a piece d<1> on the end of the gripper shaft, the grippers being turned backwards through nearly 180‹ in the slot a<1>, and are closed on the sheet by a similar pin p fixed to the framework, entering and leaving the other end of the slot in the piece d<1>, thereby turning the grippers forward.
