Abstract

24,256. Main, J. A. Nov. 9. Boring and drilling.-In a machine for drilling holes in beams and other long articles, the drilling- head is adjustably mounted on an arm secured to a travelling carriage. The carriage A runs on one or two rails B, and may be guided by a rail at the top or side. The drill spindle F is mounted in a saddle E sliding on an arm D projecting from the carriage A, and is driven by a shaft G which is driven by an electromotor or by a horizontal shaft parallel to the rails. The saddle can be moved on the arm D by a hand-wheel J, and the vertical feed of the drill can be effected by a handwheel K. The spindle G can drive, through bevel gearing, either of two clutches N on a shaft M according to the position of a lever N'. The spindle M drives a vertical spindle which may carry a toothed wheel gearing with a rack, or may drive the axles carrying the wheels on which the carriage A runs. The spindle M can also be turned by a hand-wheel 0 which is provided with an index. The carriage is held in position during drilling by a clamp P engaging with the rails and operated by screw and bevel gear mechanism as shown, or by a lever acted on by a cam. The saddle E may carry a small drill for boring holes to facilitate boring with the larger drill, or for conveying lubricant to the large drill during boring. The arm D may be rotatable on the carriage A to enable the flanges of cylinders and pipes to be drilled. In another modification, the carriage A has an arm b at each side. According to the Provisional Specification, the arm carrying the drill head may be mounted on two carriages either one at each end, or one at one end and the other near the middle. Each side of the arm may be fitted with a drill saddle.
