Set-off, preventing.-The off-set web 4, Fig. 3, passing round the impression cylinder 5 of a rotary or a flat-bed printing-machine is alternately wound and unwound on two spindles 1, 9 by a single driving-apparatus. In the position shown, the web is passing from the spindle 1, over the cylinder 5, and guide-pulleys 6, 7, round the driving-rolls 8 to the spindle 9, which is supported at the ends on inclined guides 3<x>, and bears against the roller 8, by which it is driven. When all the web is wound on to the spindle 9, it is lifted into bearings 10, and the web is passed from it over roller 11 to the cylinder 5 &c. as before, finally being wound by the driving-roll 8 on the spindle 1, which is then supported partly by the inclined guides 3<xx>, and partly by the roll 8. This process is repeated as often as desirable. In order to give an intermittent motion to the web when used in flat-bed machines, where the impression cylinder has an idle revolution, the roller 8 may be driven through a friction-wheel 20 on the same spindle engaging intermittently with a friction-wheel 15 mounted at the end of a pivoted lever 12, reciprocated by a cam 18 and a spring 19. The wheel 15 is continuously revolved by gearing 14, 13, and suitable bevel gearing, and a brake may be arranged to stop the roll 8 simultaneously with the disengagement of the wheels 15, 20.
