23,558. Eccles, A. L., Buckman, G., and Lowthorp, F. C. Oct. 30. Ironing.- Relates to internallyheated sad-irons. A hollow iron or steel body A, provided with two ironing-surfaces c, d, is revoluble on bosses attached to bails C, D connected with a handle B, which is protected by an asbestos shield E, the body being secured with either ironing-face ready for use, by a latch e operated by a lever F. The upper ironing-surface is heated, while the lower one is in use, from a gas burner tube G, the air necessary for the complete combustion of the admitted gas entering the iron through ventilating perforations f in plates a, b, which cover side apertures formed in the body A, the perforations f being so arranged that the heated air escapes from the iron on the side away from the operator. Other apertures g are formed in the end wall of the iron to assist in the equal distribution of the flame, and in regulating the draught so that the products of combustion are detained within the iron. The interior heating-faces of the body A are provided with longitudinal ridges h, h<1>, and are shaped as shown in Fig. 2, the burner tube G being placed centrally between the ridges h, h<1>, and having one end resting freely in the front end of the iron. The other end of the burner tube G is screwed to a conical chamber i provided with a gas inlet jet k and a series of air inlets l, the inlet k acting as an injector, so that, when the gas is turned on, it draws the air through the inlets l, and carries the mixture of air and gas forward to the burner tube G. The gas is supplied from a tube m supported by a projecting bracket on the bail C, the lower end of the tube m being provided with a needle valve n, operated by a thumbscrew O, to regulate the quantity of gas admitted to the burner tube g. The latter has a series of transverse slits, which are closer together at the valve end than at the further end of the burner tube, the slits being made so narrow that they act like wire gauze &c., which may be used in their place, in preventing the striking back of the flame.
