Abstract
22,053. Martin, W. C., Lowson, J., [trading as Martin & Co., W. C.], and Sayers, W. B. Oct. 13. Casings.-Consists in encasing the rotating parts of dynamo-electric machines, for use on board ship &c., within a system of overlapping plates, rings, and abutments so arranged that, while allowing efficient ventilation to take place, any liquid &c. which may enter is confined to the casing and is drained out again. The armature 1, Fig. 1, rotates within a fixed field magnet 2 having an annular yoke 3 to which are screwed rings 4 having outwardly-facing channels 4<a>. Plates 6 curved inwardly at their peripheries are secured to and overlap the rings 4, and their lower parts are perforated for the escape of liquid. Abutments 9 situated opposite to the central openings 8 in the plates 6 are cast integral with the rings 4 and bearings 11 for the armature shaft 12. In a modification, the channel 4<a> of each ring faces inwardly, overlapping the corresponding plate 6, and is itself perforated, the abutments 9 being formed as flanges on the pedestal bearings. In another modification, in order to cause the air entering or leaving by the passages 7, 8 to take a more or less sinuous path, each ring 4 is provided with three channels at its periphery, the outermost of which faces inwardly while the other two face outwardly, and the adjacent plate 6 is formed with two inwardly-curved projections which enter into the recesses thus produced in the ring 4 ; the abutments 9 and the edges of the plates 6 around the passages 8 are also formed with mutuallyoverlapping projections, the yoke being perforated in this modification. In all cases, the plates 6 are made in halves to facilitate access to the interior of the machine. The shaft 12 may have attached at one end a fan device 13, Fig. 5, which is adapted to draw in air through the opposite end of the machine and to expel it through the adjacent opening 7. One of the abutments 9 is fixed to the fan device, and the upper half of one or both of the plates 6 is hinged at 6<c> to the adjacent ring 4.
