Abstract

21,427. Davies, O. St. L., and Booth, J. Oct. 6. Designs on face, producing.-Ornamental patterns are produced on the face of pile or other fabrics by removing or partially removing the pile or nap at parts. According to one method, the parts of the fabric on which the pile is to remain are printed in an ordinary printing-machine, having more deeply engraved rollers than usual, with a thick gum or paste which may be the ordinary gum thickening used by calico printers. The gum or paste is then dried, and the fabric is guided partly round one or more internally-heated rollers by means of adjustable bars or rollers. The gummed and flattened parts are unaffected, while the unprotected pile is burned or singed away. Instead of the heated rollers, one or more heated plates may be used. The fabric is then washed or treated to remove the paste or gum, and is dressed or finished as required. Any suitable chemical solution or non-inflammable paste may be used in addition to, or instead of, the gum or paste, and coloured or other effects may be previously produced on the fabric. By varying the severity of the burning treatment, or by modifications in the gum-printing, the degree of severity of the burning of the pile may be varied in a piece. In another method, parts of the pile are depressed by printing on a thick gum under pressure, or by the use of a weighted engraved roller or plate, and the remainder of the pile is wholly or partly sheared or cut away by means of knives or cutters which may be of the kind used for shearing or cropping cloth. The invention is applicable to velvets, velveteens, and other pile goods of cotton, wool, silk, &c., or mixtures of these, and may be used in connection with flannelette to remove portions of the nap provided in the raising-machine. In this case, a gas singeing-machine may be used to remove the light unprotected nap. In the Provisional Specification, it is stated that the pile fabrics may be subjected to the action of a stationary plate or box or rotating roller internally or otherwise heated, and having the desired pattern in relief, or the singeing may be effected with the use of one or more suitable perforated pattern plates or rollers working in conjunction with a gas singeing- arrangement.
