Abstract

21,030. Viscose Syndicate, and Cross, C. F. Sept. 30. Cellulose.-Consists in purifying and refining viscose solutions, which are obtained by the interaction of cellulose, alkaline hydrates, and carbon bisulphide as described in Specification No. 8700, A.D. 1892, by separating the cellulose xanthate therefrom. The cellulose derivative, either spontaneously on standing at ordinary temperatures, or by heating to about 50‹ C., becomes insoluble in solutions of sodium bicarbonate, which are added for the purpose of precipitating it. The precipitate is then washed with sodium bicarbonate alone, or in addition, sodium sulphite may be used for facilitating the removal of bye-products containing sulphur. Sodium chloride or sulphate solutions may also be used for preventing the rehydration of the derivative while under treatment. The derivative is then treated in a press or centrifugal machine for removing excess of solution, and strong caustic soda is added in sufficient quantity to redissolve the cellulose compound, thus yielding a purified viscose solution.
