Abstract
18,550. Maclean, J. Aug. 28. Commutators for dynamos and electric motors are made of a number of segments so built into a ring that the inner ring-surface forms the hearing-surface for the brushes. The segments a, Fig. 2, of wedge shape and insulated from one another by mica e, are held together by two solid rings b, c of vulcanized fibre, parts b<1>, c<1> taking into the dovetailed back part a' of the segments. A circular channel d on one ring takes into a projection c on the other, and screws f hold the whole together. The outer surfaces of the rings b, c may be grooved to hold crossconnections where advisable, while the connections to the segments may be made by means of pins screwed into them through the rings b, c, such pins being brought out at the top or the sides. The commutator is fixed to a dynamo &c. in any suitable way, and the above construction is especially advantageous where the commutators are not of large diameter.
