Secondary batteries.-In order to prevent shortcircuiting owing to the buckling of the plates, or to the detachment of active material, plates of like polarity are placed facing each other in rows with their edges turned towards those of opposite polarity. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the positive plates a are situated between two sets of negative electrodes b, the total area of which should equal that of the positives, and they are supported on feet d soldered together and fitting in longitudinal troughs e on the bottom of a glass or ebonite vessel c. The plates of each row make contact with each other through head-portions f, g which are soldered together and act also as distancepieces. In another form, Fig. 3, the same number of positive and negative plates is employed, with feet d resting on insulating-ribs h having inclined sides. Other groupings, such as those shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, may be adopted.
