Abstract

16,808. Brewer, G., [Electricitõts Ges. Alioth]. July 31. Brush - holders.-Relates to arrangements for enabling individual brush spindles, together with the brushes mounted thereon, to be removed or replaced while the machine is in motion. The brush-holder consists of a clamp a secured to the brush spindle g and riveted to side plates b which carry the sleeve c. The carbon brush d slides in the sleeve, and is pressed downwards by a finger e operated by a spiral spring f, one arm of which is adjustable along a toothed disc y. A brass cap j on the carbon is connected by a flexible cable x to the clamp a to reduce the resistance. Two lugs h on the cap prevent the carbons from falling through the sleeve when the holder is raised from the commutator. The insulated brush spindle carriers l are mounted on the brush-holder ring k. One arm of the carrier has an eye r which receives the conical end of the spindle, while the other has a slotted eye m through which a flattened portion of the spindle can pass, and be securely held by a clamping-screw o. At the front end of the spindle is a handle q, having a recess in its central boss to receive a spring-pressed pawl p pivoted to the eye m. The spindle has a projecting part n which bears against the side of the eye m to prevent any axial movement of the brush spindle. To remove the brush spindle and the brushes attached thereto, the screw o is loosened, the pawl p raised, and the handle q turned in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3, until the projection n is in front of the slot in the eye m. The spindle is now slid axially till the rear end leaves the eye r, and the spindle is then lifted out through the slot in the eye m, the flattened portion of the spindle allowing this to be done.
