Abstract

16,378. Hochegger, A. July 24. Steering.-Relates to the steering of road vehicles having two pivoted axles or four pivoted wheels when several such vehicles are being drawn one after the other by a motor vehicle, and to means for applying brakes simultaneously to all the wheels. The axles of each vehicle are connected by diagonal cross-bars as shown in Fig. 22, so that they are always radial to the curve, being rounded, while, in the case of vehicles having fixed axles and pivoted wheels, the latter are connected as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The cars are connected together in the manner shown in Fig. 22, in which the distance 3, 4 is a geometric mean between the distances 3, 5 and 3, 6, the result being that the axles of both cars will always be radial to the same curve, thus ensuring smooth running. Fig. 17 shows a method of applying brakes simultaneously to all the wheels of the train of cars. A rope k passes from the brake lever near the driver's seat to the back of the last car, ropes such as m<1>, m<2>, connected to the brake rods n<1>, n<2>, being attached at various points. The brake blocks are normally held away from the wheels by springs p, and are jointed so that they can grip the wheels when the latter are in a position such as that shown in Fig. 3.
