Abstract
16,318. Cook, S. July 24. Stretching and tentering.-The clips of stentering &c. machines are constructed with a lower slotted jaw b, Fig. 2. forming part of the chain, and an upper jaw a' provided with pins a and hinged to a frame e', which is freely mounted on a shaft e carried by arms f<1> projecting from the jaw b. A swing frame d mounted on the shaft e and supported by the arms f<1> terminates in a guard d<3> for taking curl out of the selvage of the fabric, and a feeler c formed with a lug c<2> is hinged to projections d<2> on the frame d, and rests on the fabric as it is drawn out of the clip. During this time, the feeler engages a, lug a<3> on the jaw a' and holds the pins a out of action. When the fabric passes from below the feeler, it descends momentarily into the slot in the jaw b and releases the jaw a' so that the pins enter the selvage, a lever g mounted on the shaft e then acting on the lug c<2> to raise the feeler. The jaw a' is turned about its hinge until a lug a<4> comes against a projection g<1> on the lever g. After the clip has passed through the machine, the lever g is raised to release the jaw a', which then turns about its axis to withdraw the pins from the fabric, and, on further movement of the lever, the frame e<1> is turned about its axis and lifts the frame d ready for the application of fresh fabric. As the frame d is raised, a lug c<3> on the feeler comes against a pin c<4>, whereby the feeler is raised. The descent of the frame e<1> is limited by a lug e<3> coming against a pin on the frame d, and the jaw a' is returned to its original position, after the pins leave the fabric, by gravity or spring action. The jaw a may be provided with two or more rows of pins, and, according to the Provisional Specification, some of these may be radial and simply act to rotate the carrier, the remainder being set at an angle to facilitate the release of the fabric after passing through the machine.
