Abstract

Tyres,pneumatic; felloes or rims. - The air tube of a pneumatic tyre for bicycles, automobiles, &c. is divided into a number of independent sections, which, in their normal inflated condition, are corrugated or crimped, as shown in Fig. 2. If one section becomes punctured, the adjacent sections expand in the directicn of their length, and fill the space left by the deflated section. Fig. 4 shows a section of the tyre and rim. The sections of the air tube are inflated by forcing air, through an ordinary inflating-valve, into a tube 11, which communicates with the sections by nipples 12. When the inflation is completed, the nipples are closed by the expansion of a smaller concentric tube 13, into which air or liquid is forced through a second inflating-valve. The edges of the outer casing of the tyre are formed with ribs 3, which are pressed by the tubes 11, 13 into engagement with recesses in a rubber or like filling-piece 8, and in the sides. of the rini, or in a false rim. A single-tube tyre may be secured to the rim in a similar manner. The tubes 11, 13 are secured to the sections of the air tube by straps.
