Abstract

14,217. Carron Co., and Rodgerson, W. J. June 27. Steering - gear.- Means are provided for closing or bringing to its neutral position the controlling- valve of a steering- engine, the motion of which is controlled by the revolutions of the crank shaft, and also means for regulating the supply of steam to the valve, so that the amount supplied is proportional to the distance the rudder is from its central position. The controlling- valve B, Fig. 1, is mounted on the spindle C, having a play equal to or more than the lap on the valve face. Attached to the valve B is a piston F supplied with steam from the ports a by pipes through the valve-box G. As the controlling - valve is approaching the neutral position, one of the ports g is opened, thus moving the piston F and causing the valve B to move over the ports a, thereby cutting off the supply of steam to the engine. The movement of the piston F actuates, at the same time, the lever f, whereby, simultaneously with the closing of the valves g<1>, the valve g<2> is opened, putting the piston in equilibrium. The steam may be supplied to the valve B by way of the valve I, Fig. 3, which is operated by the eccentric N, arranged to make a more or less complete revolution from hard over to hard over of the rudder, the amount of opening being proportional to the distance out of the central position of the rudder. A regulating-nut p is fitted to the eccentric-rod P.
