Abstract
12,768. Seitz, C. S. Nov. 14, A.D. 1902, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Sleepers or ties f o r railways are formed as metallic troughs 1, the sides of which may be cut away at 4 for lightness. The ends of the sleepers are provided with laterally-projecting seats 5 for the rails, which are formed by bending down cut portions of the sides, thus forming shaped recesses to receive the rails. The rails are secured in any lateral position in these recesses by sliding clamps 10, shaped as shown in Fig. 4, to fit over the sides of the sleeper, and provided with inclined parts 11, 12 to engage the rail flange. These clamps may be adjusted, to vary the gauge of the rails, by means of bolts passing through the slots 13, and they are also secured to the sleeper by vertical bolts 18, which may be long enough to pass through bridge timbers &c. The sleepers are slotted at 2 to provide drainage when filled with ballast, or to receive and form anchor pieces when on a cement foundation. The inclined parts 11 of the clamps 10 are recessed at 16 to fit over the fish bolts at the rail joints.
