Abstract

12,336. Fimister, T. P. May 30. Ball and float valves; diaphragm valves; mixing- valves; noise, preventing.-In a ball and float valve for an ordinary flushing-cistern, whereby the latter is filled without noise, a leather, thin-metal, or other flexible diaphragm 11 is rigidly held at its ends between flanges 20 of a valve casing 14, and normally has a seating against the end 17 of a supply pipe 12. Water enters a chamber 15, from the supply pipe 12 and, passing through a small hole 21 in a stud of metal or the like fixed in the diaphragm 11, fills a larger chamber 16 on the other side of the diaphragm, which thus closes the inlet. When the cistern is emptied, a falling float, acting through a lever 23, opens a valve 19, so that the water in the chamber 16, escapes through a relief passage 18 and a pipe 24 to the cistern. The pressure of the water in the chamber 16 on the diaphragm 11, falls more rapidly than can be compensated for by the fresh supply of water through the hole 21, so that the main water supply from the pipe 12 forces the diaphragm away from its seat, and escapes through a discharge pipe 25 to fill the cistern. Fig. 6 shows a similar form of valve adapted for the supply and delivery portion of a street fountain, the valve being opened by pushing a relief valve 19, against the force of a spring 22<a>, to allow the water in the chamber 16 to escape through a relief passage 24, which, in this case, leads into the discharge pipe 25. Fig. 7 shows the application of the device to a wash-hand basin, or bath, whereby hot or cold water may be separately or together admitted to the bath &c. by turning a plug 19<a>. The Provisional Specification also states that a rigid sliding disc, moving towards and away from the supply pipe 12, may be used instead of the flexible diaphragm 11.
