Abstract

7615. Shepherd, J. April 1. Golf.-A secure and resilient connection is obtained between the head and shaft of a golf club by one or more bent or straight tongues or keys of whalebone, cane, xylonite, metal, or wood, inserted in a longitudinal groove or grooves crossing the splice or joint. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a single key A having enlarged ends a is used, secured by glue or cement, the broad face being placed to face the striking direction. The joint may be wrapped with cord, or strengthened by a metal or other sleeve. When more than one tongue is used, they may be placed side by side, but preferably, they are placed at right-angles to each other, the shorter second key being inserted in a kerf or groove made through the club and the first and longer key. Instead of using separate tongues, any one or more of the tongues may consist of a double tongue, the parts being formed integral with the shaft and the neck respectively, but out of alignment, to fit in corresponding kerfs or grooves in the related part, and lie across the joint ; a further whalebone key, crossing the tongue, is used or not, as desired. A single tongle may be used instead of the double tongue.
