Sifting and separating coal &c.-Consists of means for delivering coal, coke, minerals, or other granular materials from wagons or from shoots &c., screening and grading such materials, and discharging them upon conveyers, in one continuous process. Mounted between two rings P, which can be rotated by friction-wheels R, is a helical plate B, of such a form that sections of it by axial planes are inclined to the axis. The edge of smaller diameter is towards the left-hand end, and the space between this edge and the adjacent edge of larger diameter is closed by a spiral plate D. Similar plates G, H<1>, J<1>, 13 surround the plate B, and coal &c. fed in at the left-hand end is discharged from the helical chambers formed by these plates at 9, F, H<2>, J<2>, 14, respectively. All the plates except the last 13 are perforated at the feed end, the perforations in the plate B being the largest, and those in the others successively smaller. Thus the largest coal &c. passes out at 9, the next size at F, the next at H<2>, and so on. Each plate is fitted with a door L, one or more of which may be opened, as required, so as to mix one, two, or more sizes. The sorted material is conveyed away by conveyers &c. F<1>, H<3>, &c. The coal &c. is fed into the apparatus by means of a shoot &c., or by tipping the wagons within the apparatus. In the latter case, the rails 1, 3 for the wagon 2 are carried by rings 3<A>, 3<B> adapted to run on rollers 3‹ mounted on the helix B. The continuation rails 4, on which the wagon is withdrawn, are supported in a somewhat similar manner on rings 7 fixed to the helix B. The rings 3<A>, 3<B>, are rotated to tip the wagon by the engagement of a catch with teeth on the ring P, this catch being automatically disengaged when the wagon has turned far enough. Alternatively, the rails are fixed to the helix B, and the rotation of the apparatus must therefore be stopped to remove the wagon. In a modification, there is only one helical plate, which is perforated in alternate sections along its length, the sets of perforations being successively larger towards the delivery end, and the different sizes of coal &c. are received by conical shoots. According to the Provisional Specification, a perforated cylinder, fitted with a helical rib, may be used.
