Abstract

7337. Tunbridge, E. A. March 30. Secondary batteries.-In a secondary-battery terminal, arranged specially to protect the connecting wire or rod from the acid, the connection with the plate or electrode is made by means of a lead or lead-antimony plug B, Figs. 1 and 5, attached to the lower end of the brass A carrying the binding- screw E, K. The space between the upper tapered, recessed, grooved, or serrated end b<4> of the plug B and a surrounding case D of vulcanite &c. is filled with gutta-percha, pitch, or a fattyresinous material c, which will prevent the acid from passing upwards on the surface of the plug. The case D is held by the lower part E of the binding-screw, and may rest at its lower end in a V-groove or on a ledge on the plug. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the plug is dispensed with, and the rod A is fixed into the electrode L, and, in another modification, the rounded lower end of the plug makes contact with a wire attached to the electrode when the case D is screwed into a cup or socket on the battery cell. The plug B may be screwed at the bottom for attachment to the electrode, or may have jaws b<1>, which are engaged over it by means of suitable pliers. The connection is then completed by fusing plugs m of an alloy of lead and bismuth with or without antimony or tin, which are placed in holes in the jaws b<1>.
