Abstract

7196. Boyle, J. M. Oct. 13, A.D. 1902, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Indicating and registering observations by instruments; pressure gauges.-A recording- pencil 34 is carried by a sliding rod 2, which also carries curved contact - pieces 4, 4<1>, and is moved longitudinally by a relay motor 6, so that the contact-pieces 4, 4<1> follow the transverse movements of the pointer 3 of a steam pressure gauge, a volt-meter, or other instrument, the action of the motor 6 being controlled electromagnetically by currents supplied through the pointer 3 and contact-pieces. The movements of the pencil 34 vary in any desired way relatively to those of the pointer 3, depending on the curvature of the contact-pieces. In the form shown, the contact-pieces are two insulated plates with curved edges, which may be faced with platinum wire ; the plates are secured on the rod 2 so as to leave a narrow intervening space, into which the pointer 3 projects, so that on deflection it touches either edge. Current then passes from a battery through this edge to one of two electric relays (not shown), and the relay so operated connects another battery to one of two pairs of electromagnets 9, 9<1>, 10, 10<1>. Each magnet acts on an adjustably spring-pressed iron lift valve 23, Fig. 5, faced with leather, in one of two casings 21, 21<1>, Fig. 1, connected to the ends of a hydraulic cylinder 6, the piston of which is attached to the rod 2. The left-hand valves 9,10 serve to admit pressure to either casing 21<1>, 21, while the right-hand valves 9<1>, 10<1> connect the other casing to an exhaust passage. The rod 2 may carry a pointer 33 over a scale 30. The pencil 34 marks on a drum 35 driven by a uniformly-rotating shaft 36. When the curvature of the contact-pieces 4, 4<1> is made such that the movements of the rod 2 are directly proportional to the quantity measured by the gauge &c., the rod may operate an integrating-mechanism, which may consist of a disc 39, rotated uniformly by the shaft 35, in frictional contact with a small disc geared to a square shaft 42. The gear is movable along the shaft 42 by an arm 46, either connected by rack and wheel gearing 72 to the rod 2, or carried directly by the rod 2. The square shaft 42 is turned by the small disc, and drives counting- mechanism 37. In a modification of the electric contact apparatus, the rod 2 carries a curved edgecam, against which a horizontally sliding rod is pressed by a weighted lever ; the horizontal rod carries two short straight vertical contact-pieces, between which the pointer 3 of the gauge &c. projects.
