Abstract

6859. Bastiou, P. E. M. March 24. Converting reciprocating into rotary motion.-Relates to ratchet or toothed gearing for converting reciprocating into rotary motion, the invention being illustrated as applied to a reciprocating water-motor, and to apparatus driven by pedals. Two ratchet-wheels e, e<1>, Fig. 3, are fixed upon a shaft carrying a flywheel j and a pulley i, from which the power is to be taken. A rod b, mounted on a pivot b<1>, has one end connected to the rod a<1> of a water-motor c; the opposite end is forked, one branch inclines upwards and the other downwards, and the branches are connected, respectively, to weighted chains passing over the ratchet-wheels and over guide-wheels g, g<1>. The chains bear upon the ratchet-wheels in such a manner that, as the rod a<1> rises, one ratchetwheel is rotated by its chain while the chain on the other ratchet-wheel slips over the teeth ; in the down-stroke of the rod a', the second ratchet-wheel drives while the chain on the first one slips, and so on, a continuous motion being thereby imparted to the driven shaft. Three ratchet-wheels may be provided, as shown in Fig. 6, the branch b<3> then being in the plane of the rods a', b; the chains may be weighted as in Fig. 3, or may be connected up as shown in Fig. 6. In order that the travel of the arms b<2>, b<3> may remain constant when the travel of the reciprocating member varies, a pivoted rod k is interposed between the reciprocating member and the rod b, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8 ; the distance of the pin l, connecting the rods k, b, from the pivot k<1>, is adjustable by means of a rack n, or by other means. When the rod b is reciprocated by means of pedals, it is forked at both ends, and the shaft carrying the pedals carries also two cams, which engage, respectively, with the two branches of one of the forks. In the modified form of apparatus shown in Figs. 11 and 12, the rod b carries three toothed sectors b<2>, b<3>, b' engaging pinions e', e<3>, e', which are mounted on the shaft f to be driven, so as to drive one way, and to rotate freely upon the shaft when turned in the opposite direction. As the central sector has internal teeth while the outer sectors have external teeth, a continuous rotation is imparted to the shaft f as the rod b reciprocates.
