6628. McDonnell, H. March 21. Castors.-Relates to castors for chairs, cribs, beds, pianos, and other articles of furniture &c. A metallic shell 1, Figs. 1 and 2, is stamped or otherwise brought to the shape shown, and is provided at each side with a slot 2 formed of two slightly-inclined parts meeting in the centre, or curved to receive the axle of a roller 3, which is loose on the axle. Heads 4 keep the axle in position. A vertical stem 9 riveted to the shell 1 has a shoulder 12 to receive a flanged disc 6, and the upper end 14 is riveted over to prevent displacement of a similar flanged disc 7. A spiral spring 5 is placed between the discs, and over the discs is placed a shell 8 formed from a blank shown in Fig 5 ; the opening 18 passes over the stem 9, 9, the parts 16 are flanged to rest upon the disc 7, and the parts 11 are flanged upwards to form a support for the tube into which the castor is placed. The metal is cut away at the parts 10 to give the shell sufficient spring or tension to hold the castor in place. The spring 5 supports the article to which the castor is fixed, and the slots 2 permit the article to be turned in various directions without a corresponding turning of the roller. The spring arrangement 5, 6, 7, 8 may be used without the slotted foot, or the spring 5, and discs 6, 7 may be omitted, a shoulder on the stem then supporting the shell 8. A flanged cap fits over the stem and the shell.
