Abstract

6095. Johnson, J. Y., [Dodge, J. M.]. March 16. Driving-chains.-The object is to produce a chain without backlash, which will therefore drive silently. Fig. 1 shows a form of link which is used with the sprocket-wheel shown in Fig. 5, Fig. 4 showing the chain and wheel together. The wheel A has central teeth a<1> and side teeth a. The teeth a are engaged by the projections E on the arms D of the links, and the teeth a<1> by the backward projections F. The links are connected by the bars b engaging in the recesses c. To disconnect a link, it is turned into such a position that the lip C<1> can be slid out sideways through the slot d. The form of the surfaces E, F and the taper of the teeth a, a<1> prevents backlash. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the links bridge over the teeth. The projections a, a' on the links bear against the opposite sides i, i<1> of the teeth.
