Abstract

6048. Cotton, F. T. March 16. Incandescent gas lamps.-Relates to arrangements for the electric ignition of, the reduction of vibration in, and the ventilation of street lamps. A contact device on the column B of the lamp is connected by a wire C inside the lamp with two insulated wires, carried by a porcelain tube D, having a spark gap E over the mantle. The wire C may be double, or the body of the lamp may form part of the return circuit. The current is provided by a battery and induction coil carried by the lamplighter, having a portable contact-maker, which is provided with a push-button, and is placed against the contact device on the lamp column. To reduce vibration, the gas supply tube N, Figs. 1 and 12, is surrounded by a tube 0, closed at the bottom and containing glycerine or other liquid to form a seal for the end of the tube P, which carries the mantle and burner and works between the tubes N, O. The tube P is provided with a flange Q which rests on a spiral spring S. For ventilating the lamp, a conical flue U, Fig. 2, is arranged centrally within the cylindrical top T of the lamp, to serve as a hot-air upcast. The cold air enters through perforations V in the casing, and is deflected obliquely downwards by the lower part of the flue, and is heated by the flue before reaching the burner. The flue is provided at the top with a hollowed baffle plate W, having its concave side uppermost to prevent air from passing down the upcast. A hingeless door is fitted to the lantern so that the latter is practically airtight. The door is held in grooves or slots X, Fig. 1, at the bottom and by small draw-bolts at the top. The door is also provided with a ring or hook for suspending it from the ladder-bar while the lamp is being cleaned.
