Abstract

5307. Mills, B. J. B., [Sternau & Co., S.]. March 6. Coffee-making apparatus.-The stand has a lamp ring 4, which carries a lamp 6 of any suitable construction. The receptacle 8 rests on ribs 7, so that an air space is formed between it and the stand, which prevents the stand from becoming unduly hot. The receptacle has lugs 10 upon it as shown in Fig. 2, which pass through openings in the top of the stand and lock the receptacle when it is turned slightly. The upper end of the receptacle receives the metal coffee holder 14 ; this has a perforated bottom, from the centre of which rises the sleeve 17 to which is attached the deflector 19 so shaped as to spread the boiling water and prevent it from dropping back into the tube 21, which is entirely open so as to offer no resistance to the flow of the water. Water enters the space enclosed by the hollow funnel 22 through the tube 23. The shoulder 24 on the tube 21 holds the funnel in position, and stops water from rising between the sleeve and the tube. The glass globe 25 fits into the coffee holder, and is closed by the metallic cover 26. In operation, the globe 25 and the coffee holder 14 are removed, water is poured in, and the holder supplied with sufficient coffee and replaced together with the globe. The lamp is then lighted, and the water boiled. The boiling water is projected upwards through the tube 21 in rapidly-recurring pulsations, and is uniformly distributed over the coffee by the deflector, and, having percolated through it and extracted the soluble ingredients, returns to the receptacle 8, and is there concentrated to the required degree.
