Retort and crucible furnaces.-Relates to a process for treating ores, described as applicable to iron ores, by driving off their volatile matters by heat in a retort and subsequently smelting them in a furnace to obtain metal. In both operations, a liquid seal is used to prevent access of air. The outlet pipe 5 for volatile matters from a retort, or, as shown in Fig. 2, from a crucible furnace, leads through a condenser coil 12 to the bottom of a vessel 15 filled with water or with condensation products and this vessel is fitted with valves for removal of liquid and gas.
