Abstract

4791. Sunderland, S. March 2. Milling.-A machine is arranged to cut various forms of helical or worm wheels &c., by the use of single tooth cutter s and change-gearing. The cutter bar b is supported at one end in a driving-spindle c, and at the other end by a coupling-sleeve d' on a rod d<2> passing through a hollow screw d by means of which longitudinal movement is imparted to the cutter and bar. The screw is held against rotation in bearings d<5>, and is moved longitudinally by means of a worm-nut f rotated through bevel gearing f<9> and change gearing f<5> from a pinion f<4> on the rod d<2>. The blank h is carried by a vertical spindle g rotated in bearings on a slide g<1> by worm gearing m<1>, change gearing k<18>, shafts k<16>, k<13>, and gearing k, k<1 >from the driving-shaft. The wheel k<1> is connected to an extension s, Fig. 7, of the shaft k<13> by worm gearing k<4>, k<5>, the worm k<5> being carried by the arm of a sleeve k<2>, keyed to the extension s, and on which the wheel k<1> is freely fitted. The worm is connected by bevel gearing to a wheel k<6>, carried by the sleeve arm, and engaging a stationary wheel k<7> to impart a slight lag to the rotation of the blank corresponding to the advancing movement of the cutter, in order that the teeth may be cut by a continuous rotation of the cutter and blank. When it is necessary to advance the blank to the cutter, as in ordinary milling operations, the slide g<1> is operated by a ratchet mechanism on the screw g<2>, the pawl being actuated by some part of the machine.
