Abstract

1077. Boult, A. J., [Hofmann, W.]. Jan. 15. Wire couplings.-Wires are connected together by means of a long sleeve and bolts or the like. As shown in Fig. 1, the ends of the wires fare passed into an elliptical tube a having openings b. Wedges or pointed mandrels are passed through the lateral holes e so as to force the wires into the openings b. The wedges are then removed, and permanent bolts or the like g inserted. Instead of openings b, the tube a may be provided with protuberances. In Fig. 5, several wires fare shown connected together. In this case, the ends of the wires are brought to a butt joint in a circular tube a having protuberances c, into which the wires are forced by wedges &c. as above described. Permanent staples or the like g are then put in in place of the wedges. The device is particularly suitable for connecting wires where it is difficult to solder together the ends of the wires or to secure them to a wire-connector. The sleeves, preferably of copper, are softened by heating, and depressions or protuberances are .formed thereon by inserting a mould and placing the whole in a press.
