Abstract
861. Jensen, C. A., [Pneumatic Textile Machinery Co.]. Jan. 13. Loom picking mechanism; checking shuttles; pickers. - A pneumatic picking-apparatus, which serves also as a means for checking shuttles, comprises a main cylinder B secured to the lay I and a second cylinder C provided with a piston valve for controlling the passage of compressed air from a pipe B' into the cylinder B. A piston-rod F<9> is fitted in the cylinder C, and carries a piston F<8>, which is normally held in its outer position, as shown in Fig. 1, by means of a spring F<7> fitted within a sleeve F<6> projecting from the piston valve. A picking-head E' is secured to a rod D<3>, which carries a piston E and a disc D<5> and passes through a rod D', to which are secured a head D<4> and a plunger D with apertures D'. During the forward stroke of the piston E, air escapes from the cylinder through a series of apertures B'. When the lay returns after beating up the weft, the rod F<8> strikes a stop on the loom and is forced inwards so as to cause the piston valve to open the port between the pipe B<1> and the cylinder C. Compressed air then flows through the cylinder C into the space between the plunger D and the piston E, which is driven outwards together with the picking-head E'. During the motion, the disc D<6> strikes the head D' and causes the plunger D to cloae the port C' between the two cylinders. When the rod F<9> recedes from the stop, the springs within the cylinder C bring the parts of that cylinder into their original positions ; the head E' is then in the position shown at the left-hand side of Fig. 9, ready to act as a buffer for the incoming shuttle. The picking - head E<2> is recessed to receive a filling of raw hide, which is countersunk at its central part to receive the pointed end of the shuttle.
