Abstract

Signals or alarms for warning foot-passengers or vehicles.-Relates to means for operating the hammers of a warning-bell by motion derived from one of the wheels of the vehicle. In Fig. 1, the friction-wheel c' is pressed against the tyre a<3> of one of the back wheels by a pull on the cord g, exerted when required by the foot of the driver by means of the pedal g<2>. The friction wheel turns a shaft carrying a pulley c<2>, round which runs an endless cord c<3> communicating the motion to the pulley c<4> on a second shaft c5 carrying the hammers c<6> which strike against the bell c<7>. The frictionwheel shaft is supported by two bearings, one in a block pivoted on a vertical post, and the other in a block sliding in a guide between stops. The friction wheel is kept clear of the tyre by a spring pushing forwards the sliding block, until pressed back by a lever pulled by the cord g. Two modifications are shown in Fig. 4, in which the hammers are carried by the same shaft as the friction wheel, which here runs against the hub of one of the front wheels. The shaft is supported in a pivoted bearing k and a sliding bearing l, the end of the shaft being raised either by raising or turning the rod m<1>. In the first case, the rod m<1> attached directly to the end of the shaft is raised by depressing the pedal m<2>. In the second case, the rod m<1> is turned by the lever m' and raises the shaft by means of the link m<10>, the bell-crank lever, and the link m<7>.
