Abstract

28,082. Rites, F. M. Dec. 19. Governing compound engines.-Racing is prevented in a compound marine or other engine by causing the valve gear of one or more of the cylinders to be automatically reversed by means of a flywheel governor, so that these cylinders will oppose the action of the others. Fig. 1 shows a quadruple-expansion engine having the first and third cylinders fitted with automatic reversing- gear ; the piston valves of these cylinders open on the outside and inside respectively. All the valves may be reversed simultaneously by the usual reversing-gear. The governor consists ef a ring 10, Figs. 3 and 4, revolving with the crank shaft and carrying a pivoted arm 11, which is slotted to pass over the crank shaft and is attached to a slotted eccentric 13. -A centrifugal and inertia weight 15 is pivoted to the arm 11 and provided with stops 17, and a yoke 19. Springs connect this yoke with a yoke 21 pivoted to an arm 23 revolving with, but adjustable on, the shaft. The valve is reversed by moving the arm 23 to the other side of the line 49-50 by means of a screw 25 having a collar engaging a rocking arm 27 ; the screw moves longitudinally, and. is prevented from rotating by means of a pin 22. For the third cylinder, the governor reversing and adjusting mechanism consists of a sleeve 28, Fig. 6, mounted on a bush 30 which slides on feather keys and carries one or more spiral splines engaging corresponding grooves in the sleeve. The rocking arms 27, Fig. 3, and 32, Fig. 1, are connected by links to the weigh-shaft 34 which may be fitted with ordinary reversing-links. As the speed rises, the weight 15 and arm 11 tend to swing about the pivot 12 so as to reduce the throw of the eccentric. If a sudden change of speed takes place, the eccentric is swung to the reversing position. In a modification, shown in Fig. 7, adapted for regulating a throttle valve, releasing-valve, &c., the weight 39 is pivoted to the wheel 40 and connected by springs to an arm which may be moved similarly to the arm 23, Fig. 3, and so vary the leverage of the springs. The weight does not carry an eccentric, but is connected to a bell crank lever pivoted to a collar 45 which is pivoted to the shaft and carries a slide 46 for the governor. The weight thus pulls on the bell crank in a straight line. This governor is not reversible.
