Abstract
28,013. Chloride Electrical Storage Co., [Soc. Anon. pour le Travail Electrique des MÚtaux]. Dec. 18. Secondary batteries.-Relates to negative electrodes, and consists in making them with the active metal in a crystalline form by keeping the electrode, on which is the active mass to be reduced, at an electrical pressure as far removed as possible from that which determines the evolution of hydrogen as a product of electrolysis. For this purposes, the electrode may be made the positive pole of a couple the other member of which has a higher cathodic tension than that of the metal to be produced by the reduction. A list of the principal metals classified with regard to their electronegativeness is given in the Specification. For example, crystalline lead is prepared by reducing an oxide or a salt of lead with the aid of an electrode of magnesium, zinc, or cadmium. The electrolyte may be hydrochloric acid, a solution of the chloride of the metal (magnesium &c.), or a solution of an alkaline chloride. The size of the crystals varies inversely with the density of the current, and, with a given current density, depends on the degree of solubility of the compound used. The capacity of the cell is greater the smaller the crystals. In reducing the metallic oxides, it is advantageous to use an electrolyte which slightly attacks the oxide, forming an insoluble salt or one that is slightly soluble, but it is also possible to effect the reduction in an electrolyte which forms with the oxide a salt which is more soluble in the electrolyte than the oxide itself. The invention is applicable to accumulators having cathodes of iron, nickel, or the like in an alkaline solution.
