Bending. - A machine for twisting wires together, particularly the ends of a wire to form a hoop, has slotted twisters E<1>, Fig. 3, rotating in bearings D' on arms D and driven by bevel gearing C<4>, E from shafts C<3> connected by universal joints C' to shafts C mounted in bearings on the bed A. The arms D are pivoted at D' and geared together at D', being normally drawn together by a spring D', their free ends being supported on a segmental track A'. Between the wheels E is a gripping- device with a fixed jaw F<2> and a movable jaw F<3> operated by a treadle. A wheel (not shown), loose on the pulley shaft B<1>, gears with wheels C' on the shafts C, and can be clutched to the shaft by depressing a treadle. The wire ends G', Fig. 5, to be twisted are overlapped and gripped between the jaws F<2>, F<3>, the portions on each side of the jaws being inserted in the twisters. The edges e<2>, Fig. 9, of the slots in the twisters are sufficiently close together to follow the convolutions previously formed in the wire as the twisters are rotated, the arms D turning on their pivots as the twisters wrap the free ends G<1> round the main portions G of the wire, forming the joint shown in Fig. 7. When the joint is completed, the treadles are released, and a lug on the face of the gear-wheel on the shaft B<1> enters a recess in the bed to stop the twisters with the open ends of the slots uppermost, allowing the hoop &c. to be removed.
