Abstract

24,429. Hooper, J. P. Nov. 7. Conductors, insulating and preserving.-A central conductor of copper wire or wires, either tinned or untinned, is surrounded by a coating of pure masticated rubber, then with a coating of rubber compound known as separator, and then with a coating of vulcanized rubber over which is wound or otherwise placed a tape of aluminium foil for preserving the conductor. The outer rubber is preferably vulcanized after the aluminium tape has been wound on, and the tape may then be coated with wax, cloth, or other material, or the rubber may be covered with cloth or the like, and the aluminium wound upon this, and so on. The outer taping may replace the stranded wires forming the outer conductor of concentric cables, while the insulated conductors in concentric cables may have a winding of aluminium tape round their exterior insulation. The wires may also be directly wound with aluminium tape, round which the rubber insulating-material is placed, to prevent the rubber from coming into contact with the copper core.
