Abstract

22,888. Megill, E. L. Oct. 21. Feeding sheets platen presses.-Relates to feed-gauge and registering devices for platen presses, and comprises a side gauge to which the sheet is fed and by which it is pushed sideways as the platen closes. Fig. 1 shows a plan of the gauge, Fig. 2 a plan with parts broken away, and Fig. 3 a sectional elevation. The gauge 6 slides in a guide 5 pivoted at 5<a> on a base-plate 1 fixed by two bolts 8 to a plate 10, which is secured by paste to the platen or tympan sheet. The head 6<a> of the gauge 6 has one end 6<b> formed T-shaped and curved upwards to prevent the sheet from getting over it, the projection 6<b> taking over the sheet S, Fig. 1. The other end 6<d> plays in a slit z in the tympan sheet. The gauge is moved by a flat spring 4 pivoted on the plate 1 and having a bole in its end engaged by the prong 6<c> on the gauge. The spring 4 is straightened out, to move the gauge, by a broad arm 2 pivoted on the plate 1, and engaged by the gripper arm Y of the press as it closes on to the platen. In order to prevent a too-sudden operation of the arm 2, the latter is provided with guides or keepers 13, in which a bar 11 is 'slidably held. The bar 11 has a lateral arm 12, which is in the path of the gripper arm Y nearer to its pivot point than the arm 2, so that the arm 12 is engaged earlier and thus operates the arm 2 before it is engaged by the gripper. The bar 11 has a recess 11<a> to facilitate its removal, and, by reversing the bar, the gauge may be used on either side of the platen. The plate 10 is formed with raised portions slotted at 10<b> for the bolts 8, and slits 10<c> are made to permit the front parts of these raised portions to be depressed. A modified form of gauge is described, in which the bar 11 is omitted and a paper sheet or holder is used in place of the plate 10. The paper holder is formed with open slots for the bolts 8. Paper holders 16, Fig. 21, having one slot 15 may be used for securing the bottom gauges to the platen.
