Abstract

21,391. Conein, A. L. A. Oct. 1. Reverberatory furnaces.-Relates to a process for treating mattes and raw metals, especially for converting copper or nickel matte into copper or nickel, refining black copper, obtaining steel and nickel or chrome steels and puddling iron. A scorifying and oxidizing mixture, consisting of superheated steam, air, and silica, or other scorifying substance, is blown on to the bath in a reverberatory or other furnace in which the metal has been melted, or into which molten metal has been charged. Instead of silica, lime or silicate of lime may be used. Liquid hydrocarbons may also be introduced with the blast to raise the temperature. Other additions, such as chrome or titaniferous materials, may be introduced with the blast to produce special steels. In the manufacture of steel, a basic or neutral lined open hearth is preferably employed. The blast is introduced on each side of the furnace by inclined pipes, placed parallel to each other, but not in line, as shown in Fig. 2. Jets of steam, superheated in coils b in the smoke flues, and controlled by valves g, are used to inject the air, scorifying-materials, and oil. Air is supplied through adjustable openings f in the tuyÞre pipes, oil is led in through the hollow valve spindle g, and solid additions are dropped into the pipe from a hopper.
