21,018. Cameron-Swan, D. Sept. 26. Photo - mechanical printing.-A photographic negative is first prepared, and from this a transparent positive is printed. From the positive, a negative is printed on a copper or other plate prepared in the usual manner for carrying out the fish-glue, albumen, bitumen, or other process. In order to split the picture up into lines or dots, the transparent positive is printed through a suitable screen, or an image of such a screen is printed on the prepared metal plate before or after printing upon it from the positive. After development, the copper or other plate is etched by a suitable agent, or is treated electrolytically, to dissolve away the metal in the parts not protected by the resist. The plate is then " proved " in the usual way, and if necessary, is again etched to deepen it, either all over or locally. High lights may be produced by a scraper or burnisher. The plate may be used in a hand or other printing-press, or in a die-stamping press.
