Abstract

20,991. Coates, H. Sept. 26. Traps.-Relates to traps for catching animals and birds by means of a cord tied round the leg when the trap is sprung. Fig. 3 shows parts of the trap in the " sprung" position. The base, bait platform P, and catch C are all made as in spring-jaw traps of the usual type. The upper or spring bar A is provided with a ring R at the end, over which the catch U takes in setting the trap. A groove G with apertures at O<1>, O<2> is formed in the ring. A string M is fastened at one end to the base, and is then passed through the aperture O<1>. A knot made in the string is laid in the groove G, and the end of the string is then passed through the aperture O<2>, over the pulley H, and again through the aperture O<2>, and is then fastened to the further end of a spring S coiled round the spring arm A. The spiral spring is compressed when the trap is set, and is held in the compressed condition by a catch E on the base-plate. When the trap is sprung by an animal or bird treading on the bait platform, the cord is drawn out of the groove in the ring R, and forms a knot round the animal's leg under the combined action of the spring arm A and the spring S. A modification is described in which the coiled spring is replaced by spring arms opening out at each side of the trap.
