Abstract

15,419. Rudge-Whitworth, Ltd., and Pugh, J. V. July 10. Cranks and the like, securing.-Relates to means for securing cranks and chain-wheels on velocipede crank axles, which are made with grooved or ridged parts a<2>, Fig. 1, for fitting into correspondinglyshaped holes in the chain-wheel or chain-wheel carrier b and crank c. In order to facilitate placing the parts b, c on the axle, the respective ribs and grooves are made a loose fit, and the meeting-faces of the parts b, c are formed with ratchet teeth, as shown, so that, when the parts are tightened against a shoulder a<3> on the axle bv a nut d on a screwed extension a' of the axle, the parts b, c are forced in opposite directions by the ratchet teeth, and the ribs on the insides of the parts b, c are tightened against the ribs on the axle. One of the ribs on the axle and the corresponding grooves in the parts b, c may be made wider than the others, in order to ensure correct assembling of the parts. In a modification, a right and left hand screwed sleeve e, Fig. 5, is used to draw the parts b, c together. If the chain-wheel carrying-arms b are made in one with the crank c, a separate ratchet ring or a ratchet collar on the axle may be used to interlock with the crank. Instead of forming the parts b, c with ratchet teeth, they may be formed with straight teeth, as shown in Fig. 10, and the ribs and grooves on the axle and in the parts b, c may be inclined. Or the ratchet teeth may be used with the inclined ribs and grooves, the inclinations of the ratchet teeth and of the ribs and grooves being either in the same or in opposite directions ; or the ratchet teeth may be formed so that the parts b, c become locked when forced apart by a right and left hand screwed sleeve.
