Abstract

13,288. Lake, H. H., [Submarine Signal Co.]. June 11. Signals, marine and ship.-Relates to the transmission of sound signals from a shore station through the water to a second station or to a vessel &c. The power station is situated at an easily-accessible point on the shore, while a bell is suspended from a submerged float anchored at some convenient spot, the bell being operated electrically from the station. The transmitting and receiving apparatus at the second station or on the vessel comprises a number of diaphragms e', Fig. 7, on water-tight casings e, mounted on a central rod e', submerged in the water. The diaphragms preferably face in different directions, and transmit the impulses to diaphragms e<4> of microphone transmitters, which are electrically combined to act on one or more receivers carried by the vessel &c. The bell a, Fig. 2, for producing the signals has a water-tight casing in which a single or double set of electromagnets is arranged so that the pivoted armature A 10 may be rocked in either direction. The clapper a<2> is carried by a yoke a<14> on a shaft a<18> passing water-tight through a second casing a<19>, into which depends a forked rod a<14> secured to the armature pivot and engaging a roller arm a<17> on the shaft a<18> to operate the clapper. The clapper may be mounted in a casing A<8>, Fig. 5, and sound the bell by striking tranaferrers a<31> yieldingly secured to the casing.
