Abstract

12,715. Lanchester, F. W. June 4. Gas and explosive-vapour engines, igniting in. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the electric igniter is actuated by the piston, but any other reciprocating part may be used. When the piston moves inwards, a spring k strikes the stem a, and raises the valve. If the contents of the cylinder are in a state of compression, they act on the piston c, and throw the valve outwards on to the seat f. breaking the contact between the valve stem and the spring, producing a spark, and firing the charge. The valve bushing i is insulated, and is connected to a battery and coil, or to a magnetogenerator. A number of similar igniters, producing sparks at different times, may be provided in each cylinder. When the valve is operated by some external part, one of the contacts is fixed inside the cylinder. The spring g is sufficient to hold the valve against the compressed charge, when acting on the valve only.
