Abstract

9243. Kempshall, E. Dec. 31, A.D. 1901, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Moulding balls.-A core 22, Fig. 3, preferably of highly-vulcanized soft rubber, is enclosed in hemispherical shells 20, 21 of gutta-percha &c., which are welded or otherwise secured to it in heated or cold moulds 23, 24. The core is made slightly large, and in some cases cement is applied to the edges of the shells &c. The descent of the upper mould first causes the material of the shell to flow outwards, as shown at C, and its further movement forces the material back, forming an internal swelling 25, Fig. 7. This swelling strengthens the weld or connection. When heated moulds are used, the ball is left therein until they are cold. The outer surface is pebbled, as shown, in the case of golf balls, but is left smooth for billiard &c. balls.
