Abstract

8300. Ostwald, W. April 9. Nitric acid; nitrogen oxides. - Consists of the following improvements in the catalytic process of manufacture described in Specification No. 698, A.D. 1902:-(1) The proportion of oxygen to ammonia should preferably be in excess of that required by the following equation :-2 NH3 + 7 0 = 2 NO2 + 3 H2O. The oxygen is preferably used in the form of air. (2) The temperature of the reaction should exceed 300' C., a temperature between a dark and bright red heat being suitable. (3) The gases should be in contact with the catalytic material for as short a time as possible, to prevent decomposition ; this time should not exceed <1>/100 of a second. To carry out these requirements, two concentric tubes b, c are used. The mixture of air and ammonia, heated to 300‹ C., enters the tube b through the inlet a, and becomes heated by contact with the tube c. It then passes through the catalytic material d at the end of the tube c. The gases are exhausted or forced through the tubes. The heated product gives up some of its heat to the incoming gases. The contactmaterial used may be a combination of solid platinum and finely-divided platinum, but other heavy metals and oxides may be used.
