Abstract

7805. Grosvenor, G. W. April 3. Carpets; looms, pile forming in; shedding-motions. -Moquette or tufted carpets are woven with a thicker pile-tuft yarn than is usually employed, without necessitating the undue thickening of the back or selvages. Fig. 1 shows a method of weaving a carpet with a two-shot stitch, in which there are pairs of picks of weft b c, alternating with and without pile tufts a, which pass beneath the upper weft. In a modification, the tufts pass beneath alternate picks of the lower weft, and between the picks of the upper weft; in this modification, the tufts may pass between the shoots of weft so that their ends come together, or so that these are separated by one of the shoots of weft, as shown in Fig. 3. In order to obviate any useless operation of the tufting-motion in a four-shot loom during the insertion of the weft, modified forms of the cams described in Specification No. 21,896, A.D. 1895, for actuating the healds of the binder warps and stuffer warps, are employed. Four wefts are inserted, with the binder warp changing twice during each revolution of the cams, so as to put in two two-shot stitches, one having a row of pile tufts, and the other without pile. Reference is made to Specification No. 235, A.D. 1877. In other modifications, carpets are woven with a threeshot stitch, the pile tufts being passed beneath one of the picks of weft in every alternate set of three picks. In a further modification, shown in Fig. 9, a carpet is woven with one or more stitches each of four shots i, j, k, l, with pile tufts a<1>, alternating with one or more stitches without pile.
