Abstract
7091. Pennellier, A. D. March 22. Wire; soldering and brazing. - Wire which is required to be cut into short lengths, the ends of which are to be united by soldering, is formed with a core of solder, to render the separate application of solder unnecessary. The wires may be formed from rolled gold plate, gold, or other metal, and is suitable for the manufacture of articles of jewellery, such as chains, rings, brooches, &c. In one method of manufacture, a tubular blank is filled with solder, and the whole is drawn down to the desired gauge. In another method, a disc is coated on one side with solder and is then pressed and drawn into hollow or solid wire. If the disc is of rolled gold plate, the films of gold and solder are arranged on opposite sides of the disc of inferior metal. The tube produced from the disc by pressing and drawing may be drawn over a rod of inferior metal, the rod being solid and coated with solder, or hollow and filled with solder, and the whole being drawn down together. In another method, the hollow rod a, Fig. 14, of gold or other metal is fluted internally and filled or partially filled with solder, the whole being drawn to a tube of the desired gauge. The rod may be drawn over a core e, Fig. 19, of inferior metal, which may be fluted and filled in with solder instead of the hollow rod, or the shell a may be formed from rolled gold plate.
