Abstract

694. Cowan, J. Jan. 9. Grates.-In connection with chain-grate mechanical stokers, a subsidiary movable grate is provided under the inner end of the main chain grate, in order to prevent excess of air from being admitted at this point and to ensure the complete combustion of the fuel deposited on it with the ash from the main grate. Fig. 1 shows a tilting subsidiary grate a, which may be fixed in any position or left free to tilt by the weight of the accumulated ash. Modified arrangements of tilting- grates are described and illustrated, these grates being pivoted in the centre, and, in some cases, automatically and continuously rocked by connection with the stoker mechanism. Fig. 4 shows a subsidiary chain-grate s, and Fig. 5 a subsidiary grate in the form of a perforated rotating drum t mounted in bearings which yield laterally to allow the passage of lumps of clinker between the drum and the firebridge wall.
