Abstract

580. Thompson, W. Jan. 8. Tip-carts and tip-wagons.-Relates to tip-wagons and similar vehicles with more than two wheels, the tipping being obtained by backing the horse under certain conditions. The rear end a<4>, Figs. 5 and 6, of the fore-carriage a<2> is pivoted to the underside of the vehicle body b<1>, of which the rear part rests on a transverse frame b<3> pivoted at its front upper edge to the underside of the vehicle body, and at its rear lower edge to the rear axle b<2>, by hinge plates b<4>, b<5>, respectively. The rear axle is also rigidly connected to the arms c' of a Y-shaped frame c, of which the forward slotted member c<2> slides on a cross-bolt e secured to two bars d fixed to the fore-carriage. Normally, relative movement of the parts is prevented by a transversely sliding bar f, Fig. 4, which passes through the rear end of the slotted member c<2> and through the bars d, and by the levers i<1>, i<2>, Fig. 10, pivoted at i' to the driver's footboard, so that their outer ends take over the parts b<13> of the vehicle body. When the bar and levers have been released and the rear wheels have been blocked, the backing of the horse tips the vehicle-body. The frame b<3> may comprise upper and lower parts b<10>, b<11>, Fig. 9, between which are springs, and in this case the hingeplates b', b<5> may also slide in guides b<9>, b<8>, respectively.
