Abstract

26,619. Zimmermann, A., [Chemische Fabrik auf Act. vorm. E. Schering]. Dec. 30. Camphenes.-Camphene, free from halogen, is produced from pinene hydrochloride, hydrobromide, or hydriodide by heating these substances with alcoholic, aqueous, or gaseous ammonia, in a closed vessel at 210‹-220‹ C. for about 20 hours. When gaseous ammonia is used, an inert material, such as peat, or cellulose, is added, and the heating is repeated several times with fresh quantities of dry ammonia gas. In all cases the camphene produced is distilled over in a current of steam. In some cases it contains about 5 per cent. of isobornyl ethyl ether, which is separated by fractional distillation. The term camphene is here used to include hydrocarbons which are formed by splitting off water from borneol or isoborneol, and which can be transformed back into borneol or isomeric borneols by hydration.
