Abstract
24,805. British Thomson - Houston Co., [Read, R. H.] Dec. 5. Current meters.-A measuring-instrument contains a current-carrying conductor mounted in a stationary magnetic field, the conductor being fixed at one end and connected at the other with an indicating-device. In the form shown in Fig. 2, two conducting ribbons or wires are used, formed into flat spirals 5, 6, which are coiled oppositely about an axle 2. The axle is attached to their inner ends, and is supported between jewel bearings 3, 4. It carries a light pointer over a stationary scale. The outer ends of the spirals are secured to circularly-adjustable insulated arms 7, 8, by which the current to be measured is passed through the spirals in series. The spirals are situated in gaps between the pole-pieces N, S, N of permanent magnets or electromagnets. The opposite coiling of the spirals on the axle obviates error due to temperature variations. In another arrangement, the current passes from the outer ends of two oppositely-coiled spirals to the axle, and thence to a fixed point by a third spiral, which is not in the magnetic fields ; the magnetic fields are directed alike.
